Who supported you in this production? Did this theme find acceptance? Not many people are interested in Africa. It is far away and there are always the same things happening: killing, starving and looting. The continent, namely everything south of the Sahara has been practically erased in the minds of the German people. They say yes to beautiful pictures of a safari tour but no to those problems. These problems however, could easily be improved with the right political engagement, but the northern half of the globe will only start contemplating a move if they see an economic benefit for themselves. People are tired of African themes and that made it difficult for us to finance this film. But once we won over the TV channel „Arte“, them and their editor, Susanne Rollenberg, finally the project got rolling. The German state of Lower Saxony also supported the project through the Nordmedia. Without the personal and logistic support of the charity organisation Gulu, we couldn`t have moved freely in this region. The film could not have been realised otherwise. It is the only aid organisation where the people of the Acholi tribe get highest priority and not their offices and Jeeps. They are the only ones who dare to enter regions where normally nobody would go to help. They almost exclusively work with local workforces, which accounts |
for the costs of other international aid organisations working with a white workforce. The Gulu charity, the church with it`s bishop Odama and the priests in the missions perform superhuman feats for no money and they really care for their people. That is why the churches are overcrowded. And we are saying this, neither belonging to any church nor being baptized Catholic. How did the Pajule Aid project come into being? When we first travelled to Pajule, we were the first white visitors in two years. There is no aid organisation travelling to the village as it lies in the middle of the war zone. When the oldest people of the village guided us through the refugee camp and we were being confronted with the circumstances there, we instantly knew that we had to do something for them, such as a medical clinic. When we talked to the Gulu charity they were immediately taken by our idea and assured us their help. We went back to Germany and asked friends and families to help us organise this charity project. Some of them did and we were able to raise the important sum of 12,000 euros, to accommodate for one year for a doctor, a nurse, medical instruments and medication. |
